elements (5)
Friday, August 31, 2007 at 12:36PM day 5 - metal
friday night dinner is a big deal at our house. we welcome the sabbath with candles, wine, and challah bread, with blessings, with family and friends. tonight, i have set the table with six candlesticks (usually, we use only two), feeling very aware of the transition from summer into fall, from vacation into school, from heat into the first wisps of crisp air. feeling also aware of my many blessings - my precious family at the very top of that list. and somehow, tonight seems like a night for a blaze of fire. so we have six candles on the table, three pair of candlesticks - one pair was a gift to me at the age of thirteen (who needs candlesticks at the age of thirteen!? but i'm so glad now), one pair was a wedding gift, and the other, they were carried over on a boat by my great-great-grandmother who came from russia many, many years ago. it all just seems to fit together tonight.
i have so loved this week of elements, many thanks to shari for the inspiration. it's been a marvelous way for me to maintain my awareness as summer slips into fall, to remember that these elements surround me through all four seasons, to relish the beauty of the natural world every day.
there is a long list of participants here. i am fascinated by the widley varying interpretations of the theme.
and i have so much on my mind for next week - thoughts about the start of school, photos of my finished bathroom, a little photo project i've begun. for now, i'm looking forward to a bit more savoring - three lazy days before the wild rumpus begins on tuesday.
happy labor day weekend to all.

thanks for your kidney stone "love" (can you call it that?) earlier. i totally took it as encouragement, not a gruesome horror story. xo
